TONY BLAIR'S COMMITMENT TO L/G/B/T RIGHTS

'Webcast' interview with Sir David Frost on 29-April-1998

SIR DAVID FROST:

How far does your Christian faith influence your political decisions? Are there issues that you find it difficult to justify with your faith, but you must make decisions on them, as for instance the homosexual age of consent, how far does your Christian faith influence your political decisions?

PRIME MINISTER:

There is obviously a link between the values that I have as a Christian and my political beliefs, but I always say to people two things about this: one, I donít like to go on about it because otherwise people think you are just using your Christianity to make a political point; and the second thing is that I believe that it is perfectly valid for people to be Christians and vote Conservative, or Labour, or Liberal Democrat, whatever they want to vote, but obviously if you have a religious belief they affect your politics because politics is about people and so is religion.

SIR DAVID FROST:

What are your views on an equal age of consent for lesbians and gay men, why should it not be 16 as for everybody else?

PRIME MINISTER:

We have had debates on this in the Commons before and I have always supported the equalisation of the age of consent and indeed I spoke about it when I was Shadow Home Secretary, but these are things that have to arise, it is on a free vote and it is up to Members of Parliament as to what they do.

Note that Mr. Blair appears to be unable even to articulate the words, 'lesbian', 'gay', or 'homosexual'.
